The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fifth Class William J. Schultz, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 13 February 1969 while with a work detail on Sand Island, a remote test site near Apalachicola, Florida. Specialist Schultz was observing a YCH-47C helicopter conducting sling loading operations, when the pilot lost control of the aircraft. It somersaulted over on its back and immediately exploded in flames trapping the unconscious pilot and aircraft commander in the cockpit. With disregard for his own safety, Specialist Schultz rushed to the burning wreckage and attempted to break out the front windscreen. Although only partially successful, his actions substantially facilitated the other rescue personnel in getting the injured crewmen from the helicopter. Specialist Schultz’ valiant efforts and voluntary risk of his own life to attempt to save the life of another reflect great credit upon him, United States Aviation Test Board, and a military service.
