The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) James A. Christie, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 17 August 1968. While en route from Fort Wolters, Texas to Fort Rucker, Alabama, Lieutenant Christie observed a pickup truck at an intersection of Interstate Highway 20, Shreveport, Louisiana, which was wrecked and burning. A woman was trapped in the vehicle. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, as it was a good possibility that the gas tank might explode, Lieutenant Christie Rush to the truck, broke the windshield, and pulled the woman to safety. He then rendered first aid and assisted local police with directing of traffic. Only after seeing that the situation was well under control did he report to Doctor’s Hospital for treatment of injuries received during this deed. Quick reaction on the part of Lieutenant Christie and his companions saved the victim from serious injury and possible death. This act of heroism, above and beyond the call of duty, demonstrated unusual courage and reflects great credit upon himself, the United States Army aviation school, and the United States Army.
