The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Larry G. Smith (ASN: RA-19858740), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of the United States Army Armor and Engineer Board, Fort Knox, Kentucky, near Pilcher’s Landing, Fort Knox, Kentucky, at 1415 hours on 23 April 1968. Private Smith, under conditions of extremely high velocity winds and waves up to a height of three feet, voluntarily dived into the Ohio River to save a fellow soldier who had panicked when he was thrown into the water during a test mission for the United States Army Armor and Engineer Board. Private Smith stayed with the man, encouraged him to make a minimum effort to save himself and, by his own strength, kept the man afloat until they were both pulled from the water. In so doing, Private Smith save the life of this fellow soldier. Private Smith’s exemplary performance of duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
