The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Dennis K. Julian (ASN: RA-18814290), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 18 January 1968. While en route to Fort Benning, Georgia, the bus upon which Private Julian was traveling stopped in Springville, Utah. During the stop, Private Julian observed a woman being beaten and mauled by an armed male assailant. Without hesitation and with disregard for his personal safety, Private Julian jumped from the bus and pulled the man from the woman. During the fierce ensuing struggle, the assailant’s pistol discharged; the bullet narrowly missing Private Julian and lodging in the overhead luggage rack of the bus. Ignoring the great risk and danger involved Private Julian continued to grapple with his opponent while attempting to wrest the pistol from his grasp. Only when he was finally knocked to the ground and after the attacker had fled did Private Julian discontinue his efforts and turn his attention to the personal well-being of the woman victim. By his intrepid act of personal heroism Private Julian has reflected great honor and distinction upon himself in the United States Army. [This award supersedes the Army Commendation Medal awarded to Private Julian for heroism on 18 January 1968, as announced in General Orders Number 10, Headquarters, United States Infantry Center, Fort Benning, Georgia, dated 14 for a 1968.]
