The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Army Award) to Major Robert H. Ransley (AFSN: FR-42295), United States Air Force, for heroism, while participating in aerial flight, evidenced by exceptionally valorous actions above and beyond the call of duty as a member of the 19th Tactical Air Support Squadron, 7th Air Force in the Republic of Vietnam. On 28 October 1967 at 1400 hours while serving as Forward Air Controller in support of Ben Soi Operation 9/10, Major Ransley received an emergency call from a Staff Sergeant, whose 70 man Civilian Irregular Defense Group force was being encircled by a numerically superior Viet Cong force. Major Ransley maneuvered his plane over the attacking insurgents and marked their positions with smoke rockets for the deadly air strikes to follow. The enemy, now disorganize, fled back toward the Cambodian border approximately 5 kilometers to the west. Seizing the initiative, Major Ransley with complete disregard for his own safety again maneuvered his plane low, received heavy ground fire, and marked the fleeing insurgents for the deadly air strikes to follow .His actions turned a possible annihilation into a friendly victory. The results were 21 Viet Cong suspects captured and untold others decimated by the deadly air strikes. Major Ransley’s outstanding courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Air Force.
