The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant [then Corporal] Paul H. Johnson, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy in Zirndorf Germany, on 19 August 1966, when he helped save the life of a 14-year-old German boy. The young civilian was lighted on fire while cleaning his clothes with solvent. In complete disregard of personal injury to himself, Sergeant Johnson, through his quick thinking, threw himself onto the victim and extinguished the flames with his own body. Sergeant Johnson received severe burns on his arms but was instrumental in saving the victim’s life. Sergeant Johnson’s actions reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
