The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Donald M. Strukamp, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy after being awakened on the morning of 20 November 1967 at 0430 by the smell of smoke. Hurrying out of his Glendale, California home, he discovered that the home next door was on fire and smoking heavily. The owners of the home had become overcome by the flames and smoke and were forced to abandon the house before being able to get their nine-month-old daughter. Upon learning of this, Specialist Strukamp entered the building knowing full well the danger and crawled to the room where her baby was sleeping. He then retrieved the infant and handed her through a window to the anxious parents and then crawled to safety himself. This act of terrorism has been keenly noted and appreciated by the City of Glendale as well as by the victims and reflects great credit upon himself and United States Army.
