The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class James M. Bland (ASN: NG-29012025), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of the 41st Military Police Company, Washington State National Guard. He and three other members of the 41st Military Police Company, distinguished themselves by heroism on 10 June 1967 near Cle Elum, Washington. With utter disregard for their own safety, he voluntarily rescued a family of three from their burning car in which they were trapped. Sergeant Bland’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the service and reflect great credit upon himself and the National Guard of the United States.
