The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Aaron Blanding (ASN: RA-14844573), United States Army, for gallantry in action against a hostile force. On 13 November 1966, Sergeant Blanding was serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company A, 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, on a search and destroy mission near the Cambodian border. When the company encountered extremely heavy fire from a North Vietnamese company size unit, it was forced to pull back to the landing zone and establish a perimeter of defense. Upon entering the landing zone area, the company experienced “human waves” of attacking enemy. Sergeant Blanding was wounded in the initial barrage, yet he continued to lead his men forward. Displaying outstanding leadership and utter disregard for his personal safety, Sergeant Blanding moved among his men, directing their fire, encouraging and inspiring them, and maneuvering his fire team through volleys of hostile fire. Sergeant Blanding was fatally wounded during this action, but through his valiant efforts his men maintained the integrity and spirit so necessary for them to withstand the enemy assaults. Sergeant Blanding’s courage and determination are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
