The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Joseph C. Pash (ASN: RA-13894486), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 28 November 1966 in the vicinity of Hybla Valley, Virginia. At approximately 1835 hours, he observed an automobile collision on United States Highway No. 1. Upon impact of the vehicles involved, he quickly rushed to the scene. One of the vehicles immediately burst into flames in the area of the fuel tank. The driver of this vehicle, Mr. Clarence K. Young, lost consciousness and was unable to escape from the burning vehicle. At this time, Private Pash, with complete disregard for his own safety, ran to the burning vehicle and pulled its occupant to a safe place. He then promptly and skillfully administered life-saving first aid to the stricken man until an ambulance arrived. This quick thinking it and display of great skill contributed directly to saving the life of his fellow man. Private Pash’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
