The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant (Chemical Corps) Charles W. McConnell (ASN: 0-5418434), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy in an attempt to save others on the 11 April 1967 at Pelham Range, Fort McClellan, Alabama. Lieutenant McConnell, upon discovering a helicopter that had just crashed during a training exercise, dispatched a call for help at the risk of his own life entered the aircraft to determine the condition of the three personnel aboard. He and three others removed the three casualties from the burning helicopter, moved them a safe distance away and performed an emergency first aid for the one survivor. Lieutenant McConnell reflected great credit upon himself, the 69th Chemical Company ( Smoke Generator), in the United States Army.
