The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fifth Class Edward L. Daly (ASN: RA-19789333), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 20 April 1967 while assigned to Logistical Evaluation Division, Project Maintenance Branch, of the United States Army Aviation Test Board. Specialist Daly was en route from Fort Rucker, Alabama, to Cairns Army Airfield when he noticed that a UH-1 helicopter appeared to be having difficulty maintaining flight. Observing the helicopter as it crashed in a wooded area he rushed to the area in his car. He arrived at the crash site as the injured pilot was unsuccessfully attempting to evacuate the seriously injured and helpless copilot from the burning helicopter. Specialist Daly quickly evaluated the situation and realized that they could not remove the man from the helicopter through the window of the cockpit because of his trapped leg, and that another method of extricating the individual had to be found. Without hesitancy and with complete disregard for his own safety Specialist Daly entered the burning wreckage where he was able to extricate the trapped copilots leg and affect his removal from the helicopter. Through his prompt and alert life-saving action Specialist Daly has brought the highest credit upon himself, and the Military Service.
