The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Francis X. Leal, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 1st Training Brigade, on 13 March 1967 by saving the lives of Sergeant Robert Jackson, and Private Thomas M. Meyer. While engaged in training on the live hand grenade range, Fort Polk, Louisiana, Private Leal picked up a live hand grenade and threw it down range after it had been thrown into his bay by a fellow trainee. By his alertness and courage Private Leal reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army. [This award supersedes award of the Army Commendation Medal with ÓVÓ device for heroism on 13 March 1967 as announced in General Orders Number 66, Headquarters, Fort Polk, Fort Polk, Louisiana, dated 27 March 1967.]
