The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Samuel Frierson, United States Air Force, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 21 November 1966. Sergeant Frierson displayed perseverance, courage, and complete disregard for his own safety by entering a burning set of family quarters at Fort Dix, New Jersey, and removing a child to safety from a smoke and flame filled living room. Upon learning that five other children were playing in an upper floor bedroom, he courageously attempted to re-enter the burning building to remove the trapped children but was unable to do so due to the conflagration. Continuing his valiant actions and diligent efforts, Sergeant Frierson immediately notified the Fort Dix Fire Department of the situation, and again made a determined effort to gain entry into the building to affect the rescue of the children remaining in the building. Through Sergeant Frierson’s courageous efforts, the death of one child and possibly that of five other children was prevented. His bravery, valor and determination won him the respect and admiration of a grateful Fort Dix community, for the exemplary way in which he conducted himself on that nearly tragic day. Sergeant Frierson’s heroic conduct is in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Air Force, and reflects great credit upon himself in the military service.
