The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Karl J. Cengr, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 31 March 1966, at St. Robert, Missouri, while serving as a member of the 158th Quartermaster Company (Petroleum Depot), Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. While awaiting entry into the southbound lane of a highway, Specialist Cengr observed an airplane making a landing approach to this southbound lane. Before landing the aircraft struck a high voltage power line, caught fire, hit the rear end of an automobile and exploded. Upon seeing the airplane crash and burn and knowing that it might disintegrate at any moment, Specialist Cengr, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, saved the life of the unconscious pilot by removing him from the burning cockpit. After carrying the pilot a safe distance from the aircraft, Specialist Cengr noticed that a group of spectators and some automobiles were dangerously close to the accident scene. He ran back into the danger area, dispersed the people and automobiles and established a safe perimeter until relieved by civilian and military authorities. Specialist Cengr’s heroic action is in the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
