The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Angelo D’Alessio, Jr. (ASN: RA-13856336), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 20 August 1966, at Howard Air Force Base, Canal Zone. After having witnessed a collision between a motorcycle and passenger car wherein two Panamanian nationals had incurred serious injury and were in impending danger of being burned alive, Specialist D’Alessio, with un-vacillating courage, and without consideration for his own personal safety or well-being, entered the impact area, which was then engulfed by intensely hot flames, and affected the safe evacuation of a four-year-old Panamanian child. Completely satisfied that all victims had been safely removed from the flaming holocaust, he again entered the impact area whereupon he discovered a fellow trooper was experiencing extreme difficulty in effecting the removal of the last victim. With an attitude of urgency and seeming invincibility, Specialist D’Alessio quickly assisted in the successful removal of the last victim though he himself was subject to receive serious burns and permanent injury. The unwavering courage, resolute action, and complete disregard for personal safety display by Specialist D’Alessio reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
