The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Sixth Class Tillman C. Slayden (ASN: RA-14217798), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Battery A, 4th Missile Battalion (NH), 43d Artillery, on 29 December 1966, at Anchorage, Alaska. At approximately 1100 hours, Specialist Slayden responded to a call for help from Tony Shivers. The Shivers trailer home was engulfed in flames when Specialist Slayden arrived. Unable to gain entry through the front door of the trailer, he forced the rear door open and without regard for his own safety, entered the trailer and found the Shivers’ children standing near the burning living room, immobilized by fear. Grabbing the children, Specialist Slayden tossed them one after the other through the back door into the snow. After ascertaining that no other children were in the trailer, Specialist Slayden took the Shivers’ children to his home to await the return of their parents. As a result of Specialist Slayden’s quick actions, there were no injuries to the children, but the trailer and the family dog were lost as a result of the fire. Specialist Slayden’s heroic action is in keeping with the highest tradition of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
