The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Arthur L. Stewart (ASN: ER-13991249), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy at approximately 2400 hrs. on 3 August 1966, by voluntarily exposing himself to great personal hazard by participating in the rescue of three individuals, who were trapped in an automobile accidentally overturned in a lake. Private Stewart repeatedly dove underwater and swam inside the immersed vehicle to release two of the individuals trapped therein. Finally he was able to release the third person who was trapped by the seatbelt. Without these heroic efforts these men would have surely died. Private Stewarts actions bring great honor to him and the United States Army.
