The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fifth Class Dale H. Slater, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy by voluntarily risking his own life to save a drowning man on 18 November 1965 at Red Beach, Dominican Republic. Specialist Slater, with no regard for his personal safety, swam to the aid of Mr. David E. Molovinski (then Master Sergeant), who struggled under the influence of a strong undertow current. Though he was less than an average swimmer himself and had no training in lifesaving techniques, Specialist Slater held Sergeant Molovinski at the surface of the water and assisted him to a safer location from whence they proceeded to the shore. As a result of alertness and rapid recognition of the emergency of the situation Specialist Slater saved the life of Sergeant Molovinski at the risk of his own. Specialist Slater’s act of heroism reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the military service.
