The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant First Class Jimmie R. Potts, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving as a United States Army Recruiter with duty station Camden New Jersey, on the morning of 5 November 1966. Sergeant Potts and a fellow recruiter arrived at the scene of an accident which had just occurred. Looking into Little Timber Creek, he saw the wheels of a car which had left the road, overturned, and submerged in five feet of water. Exhibiting dauntless courage, unusual heroism, and a total disregard for his own safety, he jumped into the water, pulled the driver from the car, and carried him to shore. With the aid of a bystander, Sergeant Potts lifted the driver to solid ground where he rendered mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and external heart massage, restoring the victim’s heartbeat. Manifesting the precepts of conduct most cherished by mankind, Sergeant Potts endangered himself to save the life of another. Sergeant First Class Potts’ conspicuous bravery was beyond the call of duty and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
