The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Rigoberto Mancha, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy. On 28 March 1966, at range 18 Wildflecken, Bless Germany, Sergeant Rigoberto Mancha , Company A, 4th Battalion, 18th United States Infantry, distinguished himself with his display of extraordinary terrorism by saving a fellow soldier from death or extreme bodily harm. While acting in the capacity of a safety noncommissioned officer on a grenade firing range, Sergeant Mancha, without regard for his personal safety, deliberately moved to an activated grenade which had been accidentally dropped amidst other personnel by an individual in the throwing line. While issuing instructions to personnel within the danger area, Sergeant Mancha kicked the armed explosive three times directing it into a grenade sump and dove for cover behind a beam justice the grenade exploded. The cool courage and professional foresight demonstrated by Sergeant Mancha were in the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, Berlin Brigade and the United States Army.
