The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Herbert N. Ratenburg (ASN: 2980), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Sanitary Detachment, 101st Machine-Gun Battalion (Attached), 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, north of Chateau-Thierry, France, 22 July 1918. Although wounded in three places by machine-gun bullets, Sergeant Ratenburg followed the attack and continued his duty, thereby inspiring his comrades.
