The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant First Class Vincent P. Boyer, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Service Battery, 2d Battalion, 83rd Artillery, on 20 August 1965 in Germany. Sergeant Boyer was near a refueling station when a tank recovery vehicle, loaded with hundreds of gallons of gasoline, exploded and engulfed the driver in flames. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Boyer swiftly mounted the blazing vehicle and pulled the burned and dazed driver to safety. Continuing to display his indomitable courage and determination, he returned to the burning vehicle and activated the vehicular mounted fire extinguishers, bringing the fire under control. His prompt actions, bravery, and sound judgment averted further explosions in the fuel storage area and prevented possible injury to personnel on the scene. Sergeant Boyer’s profound concern for a fellow soldier and heroic conduct in this disastrous situation are in the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
