The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Soldier’s Medal (Posthumously) to Major (Transportation Corps) H. Beecher Dierdorff, Jr., United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving as a member of the United States Army Edgewood Arsenal, Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland, on 2 February 1966 at Madonna, Maryland., When a request was received from local civilian authorities for helicopter evaluation of a stranded expectant mother, Major Dierdorff unhesitatingly volunteered to assist in the hazardous mission. Although snow was light when he departed in the predawn hours, he encountered blizzard conditions which caused the loss of visual reference to the ground. Despite the turbulence and blinding snowstorm, he continued his efforts until the blizzard claimed his own life .Major Dierdorff’s heroic conduct and humanitarian efforts are in the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
