The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant First Class Frederick M. Bieger, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while participating in a Service Test conducted by the United States Army Artillery Board at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, on 17 August 1965. Sergeant Bieger was standing at the rear of a 105-mm. Howitzer M-102 when it was fired and the projectile malfunctioned, severing the tube of the Howitzer and igniting the additional ammunition on the ground. Although the initial explosion caused the immediate death of two individuals, severe leg injuries to another, and knocked a third person to the ground in a stunned condition, Sergeant Bieger unhesitatingly moved forward to assist in the rescue effort. Despite the extreme hazard, he displayed complete disregard for his own safety, moved past the burning ammunition and another projectile which detonated, and succeeded in evacuating the soldier with a severe leg injury to an area of safety. Sergeant Beiger’s heroic conduct, prompt actions, and deep concern for the safety of his fellow soldiers are in the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
