The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Lonnie Glasscock, III, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of the United States Military Liaison Mission, United States Forces, on 1 June 1965, in Potsdam ,Neu Fahrland, Soviet Zone of Germany. Private Glasscock was the driver of a United States Military Liaison Mission reconnaissance vehicle when a dangerously hostile mob surrounded the United States car and attempted to destroy it and injure the occupants with stones, bricks, and clubs. Despite the hail of objects on the windshield and the shattered fine glass in his eyes and face, Private Glasscock responded to the hazardous circumstances with determination, courage and sound judgment. He successfully broke through the blockade of rioters to establish the first contact with personnel in the United States Military Mission Potsdam House which had been under violent attack by the same unruly mob. Through his bravery, skill as a driver, and profound concern for his fellow man, possible injury to the occupants of the vehicle was prevented and the United States Mission House was provided with reinforcements. Private Glasscock’s heroic conduct in this extremely dangerous situation is in the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
