Department of the Army, General Orders No. 40 (December 9, 1965)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Bruce D. Chambers, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion (Mechanized), 23rd Infantry, 2d Infantry Division, on 18 November 1964 at Fort Benning, Georgia. Private Chambers was performing his duties in the motor pool when he saw a gasoline tanker on fire. With complete disregard for his own safety, he ran to the burning tanker and drove it away from other fuel tankers which were parked next to the blazing vehicle. Through his prompt actions and courageous efforts, he prevented possible injury to personnel on the scene and loss of valuable Government Property. Private Chambers’ heroic conduct in this emergency is in the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
