The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Roy D. Carmack, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Company C, 2d Battalion (Mechanized), 17th Infantry, on 12 April 1965, in Korea. Sergeant Carmack was on the scene during a mechanical repair of an Armored Personnel Carrier when the vehicle, loaded with ammunition, burst into flames. After two mechanics were forced from the carrier when the fixed fire extinguisher failed to put out the blaze and an explosion was imminent, Sergeant Carmack displayed complete disregard for his own safety in an effort to extinguish the fire. He grabbed a portable fire extinguisher and, although attired only in field clothing, entered the burning carrier and succeeded in extinguishing the flames. His courage and prompt actions presented possible injury to personnel on the scene and damage to Government property. Sergeant Carmack’s heroic conduct in this emergency situation is in the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflects great credit upon himself in the military service.
