Department of the Army, General Orders No. 40 (December 9, 1965)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Frederick C. Burk, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Company C, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), 1st Special Forces, on 29 May 1965 near Oberwarngau, West Germany. Sergeant Burk was driving on a road in Germany when he witnessed a motor vehicle crash in which one of the cars immediately burst into flames. He stopped his car, rushed toward the burning vehicle with a fire extinguisher, and attempted to put out the fire in the blazing car occupied by an American soldier and a German girl. When this action did not quell the fire, he disregarded his own safety, entered the flaming vehicle, removed the unconscious girl, and placed her by the side of the road. Then with the assistance of a German national, he removed the American soldier from the vehicle and carried him to safety. Continuing his profound concern for his fellow man, he administered first aid to the victims until medical assistance arrived on the scene. Sergeant Burk’s sound judgment, prompt actions, and heroic conduct in this emergency are in the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
