The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant William Howard Barksdale (ASN: US-53844419), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Barksdale distinguished himself while serving as a Squad Leader with Company B, 3d Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. On 11 March 1969, Company C of the same battalion came in contact with a numerically superior enemy force. Sergeant Barksdale’s unit was called upon to reinforce the friendly forces. Immediately upon his arrival in the landing zone, his squad came under heavy sniper fire. Realizing the poor position his men were in, Sergeant Barksdale led them to the most favorable positions, directing their fire and encouraging them the whole time. On numerous occasions he exposed himself to the enemy to more effectively engage them. While firing on the enemy he was mortally wounded by hostile sniper fire. Sergeant Barksdale’s outstanding leadership, determination and exemplary devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
