The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Donald T. Haugen (ASN: RA-18837459), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 179th Aviation Company, 1st Aviation Brigade, in the Republic of Vietnam on 9 October 1968. Specialist Fourth Class Haugen distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as a gunner on a CH-47 helicopter loaded with ammunition, which crashed and burned in dense jungle due to engine failure. Two men were trapped in the burning ship, and Specialist Haugen unhesitatingly attempted to save them. Upon entering the wreckage he was almost overcome by the intense heat and smoke. Nevertheless, he removed ammunition and other debris off the two men, as explosions continually rocked the wreckage. Just as he pulled one soldier free, and artillery round exploded. Although the explosion stunned him, Specialist Haugen was able to clear a path through the burning wreckage which enabled the pilot to carry the wounded man to safety. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
