The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Chief Warrant Officer (CW-2) James C. Creagan (ASN: W-3154873), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 235th Aerial Weapons Company, 1st Aviation Brigade, in the Republic of Vietnam on 3 November 1968. Chief Warrant Officer Creagan distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander of an AH-1G helicopter near Phu Quoc Island in the Gulf of Siam. While on a night approach to a helipad located on the deck of a Navy LST, his aircraft struck the water. As it began to sink, he stayed in the flooded cockpit to assist his pilot in opening the pilot’s canopy door. Only when certain that his pilot was safely out of the aircraft did he attempt to leave the inundated cockpit. Through his selflessly courageous performance, Chief Warrant Officer Creagan undoubtedly saved his pilot from drowning. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
