The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Armor) Friedrich K. Rosenberger (ASN: 0-5320521), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Troop A, 7th Squadron, 17th Air Cavalry, 1st Aviation Brigade, in the Republic of Vietnam on 24 September 1968. Captain Rosenberger distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as mission commander of a combat assault operation near Duc Lap. Receiving word that medical evacuation ships were unable to enter the contact area due to heavy enemy automatic weapons fire, and that several men were seriously wounded and evacuation was needed for them, he immediately flew to the area. Quickly evaluating the tactical situation he proceeded at tree top level, at high speed and with door guns blazing, toward the “hot” pickup zone. He landed his bullet-riddled helicopter between the enemy and the wounded men, offering them protection from the intense enemy fire while boarding the ship. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
