The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Armor) John D. Jenks (ASN: 0-5307356), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Troop A, 3d Squadron, 17th Air Cavalry, 1st Aviation Brigade, in the Republic of Vietnam on 12 – 13 August 1968. Major Jenks distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as the pilot of a light observation helicopter in support of a reconnaissance mission in Long An Province. When the supported ground elements came in contact with the enemy and were unable to advance upon them, Major Jenks began orbiting the area in order to direct the gunships on the hostile emplacements. The following day, Major Jenks continued his directional guidance to the advancing friendly soldiers, thereby enabling them to close in on enemy concentrations and destroy them. Remaining on station until his fuel supply had reached a critical point, he was credited with the annihilation of several enemy soldiers. His complete disdain for the personal danger he was exposed to, coupled with his extreme courage and professional skills as an aviator was truly responsible for the outstanding results of this intricate mission. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
