The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Warrant Officer (W-1) Charles R. Campbell (ASN: W-3159510), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with the 68th Assault Helicopter Company, 1st Aviation Brigade, in the Republic of Vietnam on 17 August 1968. Warrant Officer Campbell distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander of a UH-1D helicopter during a combat assault. Warrant Officer Campbell’s aircraft, along with three others, was called upon to insert a small element of infantrymen into an area near a village. As the four aircraft touched down in the landing zone, intense automatic weapons fire erupted from the front and both flanks. The third aircraft in the formation was hit in the fuel cells by an enemy rocket, which caused it to explode and burst into flames. The crew, although wounded, evacuated the burning wreckage and ran though enemy fire to a nearby dike line. The other two aircraft executed an immediate take off, yet Warrant Officer Campbell remained in the landing zone to attempt an extraction of the downed crew. He daringly hovered in the landing zone to pick up the crew, while his aircraft received multiple hits from enemy fire. After evacuating the crew to a hospital in Saigon, he returned to assist in the insertion of two additional infantry battalions. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
