(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Captain John A. Boyles, United States Air Force, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a helicopter rescue crew commander, Detachment 4, Pacific Air Rescue Center, in the Republic of Vietnam on 1 December and 16 December 1964. On 1 December Captain Boyles flew his helicopter to the site of an A-1E aircraft which had been shot down over a known enemy stronghold. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he held his helicopter stationary over the wreckage during the intense search for survivors. Although fatigued and aware of small arms fire, he maintained a stable hover until the recovery of the pilot. On 16 December, Captain Boyles rescued a Special Forces sergeant. The rescue required Captain Boyles to hover over 150-foot-tall trees, using all available engine power to prevent the helicopter from settling into the trees.
