The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Sergeant Norman D. McMullen (ASN: RA-11637795), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty. Sergeant McMullen distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as doorgunner during an emergency extraction of a five-man short range recon patrol, heavily engaged with an enemy force near Duc Co. Due to the dense jungle terrain, his ship was forced to make a slow, low level approach into the extraction site, while receiving a barrage of fire through the cargo compartment. Unable to return fire due to the friendly patrol, Sergeant McMullen calmly and professionally directed the aircraft commander’s movement over the tree tops. His ship was landed in an open field in the midst of incoming enemy grenades. Having positively identified the enemy’s positions, he was now able to return suppressive fire with his single M-60 machinegun, silencing one of them. He continued his vigil while the patrol boarded the aircraft, thus halting enemy advancement. As the ship flew to the nearest medical facility, he noticed that the main fuel cell had been ruptured by an enemy round. Keeping his aircraft commander advised of the critical situation, Sergeant McMullen showed a high degree of proficiency and devotion to duty. His exceptional courage was truly commendable. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
