The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Specialist Fifth Class Edward A. Randall (ASN: RA-11747427), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty. Specialist Randall distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as crewchief during the successful extraction of a five-man short range recon patrol, heavily engaged with an enemy force near Duc Co. Due to the dense jungle terrain his ship was forced to make a low, slow approach into the extraction site. As enemy fire ripped through the cargo compartment and critically damaged his ship’s fuel cell, he calmly directed his aircraft commander’s movements over the tree tops, unable to return fire, due to the friendly patrol being in the area. The aircraft was landed in an open field in the midst of incoming enemy grenades. Having positively identified the enemy’s position, he was now able to return fire with his machine gun. With the entire patrol aboard, the aircraft was flown to the 71st Evacuation Hospital. Specialist Fifth Class Randall showed a high degree of skill and courage in his performance under such hazardous conditions. His deadly accurate fire prevented the enemy troops from inflicting any casualties among the crew members. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
