The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fifth Class Bruce L. Free (ASN: RA-17751301), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 189th Aviation Company, on 5 October 1968 in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fifth Class Free distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions during an aircraft crash and resultant fire. When the aircraft crashed onto the runway, he immediately raced through flaming wreckage and exploding ammunition to rescue a trapped crew member. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, he entered the flaming ship, carried the crew member to safety, extinguished his flaming clothing and applied emergency first aid until medical aid men arrived. Through his selfless courage, Specialist Free saved the man’s life. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
