The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Pat D. McEwen (ASN: RA-15927702), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 189th Aviation Company, on 5 October 1968 in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class McEwen distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions during an aircraft crash. Specialist McEwen observed the aircraft crash on the runway and raced through the wreckage and flames to remove a critically injured pilot. Ignoring the danger of ammunition explosion, he freed the trapped pilot from the inflamed cockpit, carried him to safety, and immediately began applying emergency first aid until a medical team arrived. Through his selfless courage, Specialist McEwen saved the airman’s life. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
