The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Dannie J. Wood (ASN: RA-14887027), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 189th Aviation Company, on 5 October 1968 in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Wood distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions during an aircraft accident and the resultant fire. When the aircraft crashed on the runway, he immediately raced through burning wreckage and exploding ammunition to rescue a trapped crew member. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, he entered the flames and helped carry the crew member to safety. He then extinguished the burning clothing of the crew member and applied emergency first aid until a medical aid team arrived. Through Specialist Wood’s selfless courage, the crew member’s life was saved. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
