The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Corporal William Sergi (ASN: 33439926), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 90th Infantry Division in northern France. On 9 August 1944 in ***, France, a comrade of Corporal Sergi accidentally spilled a quantity of gasoline on his clothes. The gasoline ignited and the soldier became panic stricken and started to run. Corporal Sergi and a companion tackled him in spite of his burning clothes, threw him to the ground and smothered out the flames with a shelter-half and towel, thereby saving the soldier’s life.
