The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Master Sergeant Clarence L. Wheeler (ASN: 6211493), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 90th Infantry Division in northern France. On 22 July 1944 an enemy shell set fire to two trucks containing 105-mm. ammunition. Sergeant Wheeler with disregard for his own personal safety procured a fire extinguisher, rushed to the burning trucks in which ammunition was then exploding and succeeded in bringing the fire under control. By his cool and courageous act he prevented the total amount of ammunition in the truck from exploding, thereby saving the lives of members of his unit who were nearby.
