Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), General Orders No. 6036 (April 17, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Clifford Morris Davis, Jr. (ASN: US-56434621), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Company E, 1st Battalion (Airmobile), 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Davis distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 7 March 1970, near Phouc Long Province in the Republic of Vietnam. When his unit encountered intense small arms and automatic weapons fire from an undetermined size hostile force, Specialist Fourth Class Davis immediately moved forward through a barrage of fire to bring his wounded comrades back to safety. After his unit had pulled back to set up a defensive perimeter and call in artillery rounds, he again exposed himself to the enemy fire to crawl outside the friendly lines and retrieve ammunition and smoke grenades. His gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
