The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Kevin Melbourne Dailey (ASN: RA-19877600), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Specialist Fourth Class Dailey distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 23 March 1967, while serving as a fire team leader with Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during a search and destroy mission in the An Lao Valley, Republic of Vietnam. After contact had been made with the enemy and a platoon perimeter established, Specialist Dailey, with complete disregard for his own safety, made a gallant attempt to rescue a wounded comrade. Before he could reach the fallen soldier, Specialist Dailey was wounded and forced to return to his platoon’s position. Refusing medical aid, Specialist Dailey immediately coordinated the fire of the platoon’s machine gunners enabling them to more effectively engage the hostile force. Still refusing medical aid, Specialist Dailey set out once again to extract his wounded comrade. Moving from position to position while firing on the enemy, Specialist Dailey had maneuvered to within 50 meters of his friend when he himself was struck by hostile fire and mortally wounded. Specialist Dailey’s gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
