Department of the Army, General Orders No. 29 (August 27, 1965)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Johnnie L. Fox, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as Section Chief of the 3d Howitzer Section, Battery C, 2d Howitzer Battalion, 16th Artillery, on 4 November 1962, in the vicinity of Offenheim, Germany. When one of the Battery’s self-propelled Howitzers developed a gasoline leak, caught fire, and continued to pump gasoline, the crew abandon the hazardous vehicle. Although Sergeant Fox had not been working on the track at the time it caught fire, he voluntarily boarded the burning vehicle and removed powder canisters and small arms ammunition. Despite the extremely dangerous situation, he continued his courageous actions by participating in the firefighting effort until the flames were extinguished. Through his prompt action, determination, and bravery, he prevented possible loss of life to personnel in the area and further damage to eight valuable government property. Sergeant Fox’s heroic conduct is in the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
