Department of the Army, General Orders No. 27 (August 13, 1965)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Bobby J. Murdock, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Headquarters and Service Company, 4th Training Brigade, United States Army Training Center, Armor, on 11 May 1964, at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Lieutenant Murdock was serving as a Safety Officer on a hand grenade range when a trainee, who was preparing to throw a live grenade, accidentally dropped the armed grenade inside the throwing bunker. With complete disregard for his own safety, Lieutenant Murdock dove toward the grenade, snatched it from the ground, and hurled it into the impact area. Continuing his courageous actions in almost simultaneous motion, he lunged toward the trainee and succeeded in pulling him back into the safety of the throwing bunker moments before the grenade detonated. Through his bravery and spontaneous reaction to a hazardous situation, he averted injury and possible loss of life to personnel in the area. Lieutenant Murdoch’s prompt and heroic action is in the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself in the military service.
