The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Jack J. Cicolello, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Company C, Supply and Maintenance Agency, United States Army Communications Zone, Europe, in the vicinity of Verdun, France, on 18 December 1964. Sergeant Cicolello and two other Army soldiers were on the scene when a fire broke out in a trailer which was the home of a military family. Upon learning that a 15-month-old child was inside the blazing trailer, Sergeant Cicolello and his fellow soldiers broke down a locked door to rescue the baby. With complete disregard for his own safety, he entered the flaming structure and participated in the evacuating the child to a place of safety. Then noticing that the little girl was suffering from smoke inhalation, he administered first aid to restore her breathing to normal. After the child was taken to a hospital, he remained on the scene to assist in fighting the fire despite the danger of exploding fuel storage containers. Sergeant Cicolello’s prompt actions, sound judgment, and heroic conduct in this emergency are in the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
