The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant First Class LaMar E. Wood, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member as of Company B, 1st Battalion, Medical Field Service School, Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, on 11 July 8, 1964 on Lake Austin, Austin, Texas. Sergeant Wood was preparing to go boating on the lake when he observed a motor boat burst into flames and two persons leap into the water. Although the flames were already thirty feet high, he immediately set out in another boat to aid the victims. Ignoring the impending explosion of the blazing craft and with complete disregard for his own safety, he approached the seriously burned victims struggling in the water, lifted them into his boat, and transported them to the safety of the shore. Sergeant Wood’s heroic conduct, prompt action, and deep concern for his fellow man are in the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
