Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division, General Orders No. 2431 (July 18, 1966)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class John Edward Cail, Jr. (ASN: RA-14844029), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Specialist Fourth Class Cail distinguished himself while serving as an Assistant Machine Gunner with Company C, 2d Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, on 9 May 1966. At this time the company was searching an area that was thought to contain an enemy battalion. As the company progressed through the area they were suddenly engaged by a large enemy force. In spite of the fact that Specialist Fourth Class Cail had a double basic load of ammunition, it was rapidly being used up. It was imperative that immediate re-supply be effected. The enemy was in close proximity to Specialist Fourth Class Cail’s position and were laying down a heavy volume of fire, yet Specialist Fourth Class Cail left his cover and concealment to dash to the company supply point for more ammunition. Although forced to the ground three times by the murderous fire Specialist Fourth Class Cail continued back to his position. He had nearly reached his gun position when he received a mortal wound. However, he was close enough for his besieged gun crew to retrieve the ammunition and inspired by his dauntless courage they were able to drive back the fanatical enemy. Specialist Fourth Class Cail’s unimpeachable gallantry in close combat against numerically superior enemy forces is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
